Woodside: A Study in Earth, Light, and Texture

In the heart of the Adelaide Hills sits a residence that feels less like a house and more like a part of the geology. Defined by massive rammed earth walls and vast spans of timber-framed glass, this Woodside home is a masterclass in organic architecture.

Designed by Georgie Shepherd Interior Design (GSiD), the interiors demonstrate how to balance grand, structural elements with the soft, human touch of natural textiles. At Natural Rugs, we provided the foundational layers that ground this architectural vision, ensuring every room feels as warm as it looks.

The Material Palette: Why Natural Fibers?

Rammed earth and polished concrete are stunning, but they are "hard" materials—both visually and acoustically. To turn these expansive rooms into intimate sanctuaries, Georgie selected three of our most tactile textures to create contrast:

  • Seagrass Squares: A nod to traditional, modular craftsmanship. The structural nature of the seagrass squares adds a rhythmic detail to the floor that mirrors the clean lines of the timber-cladded ceilings.

  • The Orantan Wool and Jute: Our Orantan is a lush, chunky, and incredibly soft wool and jute blend and works perfectly in this living space. It provides that immediate sense of "sink-in" luxury, offering a heavy, tactile weight that anchors the room and feels sublime underfoot.

  • The Aspen Wool and Jute:  Our Aspen offers a tighter, more refined weave. It provides the essential warmth needed for the bedrooms while maintaining the tonal "sand and silt" palette of the home’s structure

Bringing the Outside In

In the bedrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows look out over rolling Woodside paddocks. To maintain this connection to the view, the design avoids synthetic dyes or distracting patterns. The undyed, natural hues of the Aspen rugs ensure that the eye moves seamlessly from the interior floor to the golden grasses of the landscape beyond.

"The secret to this look is Tactile Contrast. The roughness of the rammed earth demands the softness of wool, while the sleekness of the concrete is the perfect foil for the organic 'crunch' of natural jute."

Preserving the Beauty: Technical Care for Natural Fibers

A home designed for the Australian landscape should be as practical as it is beautiful. Because these rugs are crafted from 100% natural fibers, they require specific care to maintain their longevity:

  • Seagrass Care: Naturally non-porous and incredibly durable. Seagrass is water-resistant, making it ideal for high-traffic zones. Simply wipe spills with a cloth. It thrives with a little atmospheric humidity, making it perfect for the Adelaide Hills climate.

  • Wool & Jute (Aspen & Orantan): These blends offer premium comfort but prefer a gentle touch. Vacuum regularly with a suction-only head (avoid rotating beater brushes which can fray the fibers). For spills, blot immediately with a clean, dry towel—never rub. Remember to get asorb all the liquid.

  • Sun & Rotation: In light-filled architectural homes like Woodside, we recommend rotating your rugs every 6 months to ensure even wear and natural sun-mellowing.
