Steal the Style: The ‘Rule of 6’ Rug Strategy at Pine Ridge Retreat

Perched on a scenic ridgeline in Barrine, overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Tinaroo, stands a home that doesn't just sit on the landscape—it commands it. Pine Ridge Retreat, the 2025 HIA North Queensland Home of the Year, is a masterclass in modern pavilion architecture.

But how do you make a home with 8.5-meter soaring ceilings and vast open-plan pavilions feel intimate instead of cold? The secret lies underfoot. The designers at Ash Moseley Homes collaborated with Natural Rugs to implement a sophisticated 6-rug strategy that anchors the luxury.

The Builder’s Verdict

For Ash Moseley, the award-winning builder behind the project, the choice of flooring was about more than just aesthetics—it was about lifestyle.

"The rugs in our house—we are really happy with them," says Ash Moseley. “They provide that essential layer of comfort and texture that a home of this caliber demands.”

1. The Anchor: Deep Sea Wool & Jute

In a massive open-plan space, furniture can often look like it’s "floating." To solve this, the designers utilized two Deep Sea rugs to provide a moody, grounded contrast to the light European Oak floors.

  • The Dining Space: The larger of the two was placed under the massive dining table to define the zone.

  • Designer Secret: The "Deep Sea" charcoal-navy tones mimic the depths of Lake Tinaroo, creating visual harmony between the interior and the view outside.

  • The Feel: The blend of durable jute and soft wool provides a plush contrast against the home’s cool limestone tiles.

2. The Movement: Triple Seagrass Runners

One runner can look like an afterthought; three runners create a rhythmic "runway" effect. Used throughout the expansive glass-walled corridors, these three Herringbone Seagrass runners serve as the home's textural workhorse.

  • Durability: Seagrass has a natural waxy coating, making it incredibly resistant to the "red dust" of the Atherton Tablelands.

  • The Look: The classic herringbone weave creates a sense of direction, guiding guests through the different pavilions of the home.

3. The Curveball: 1.8m Grey Mist Round Rug

Modern architecture is full of 90-degree angles. To "break the grid," the designers introduced a 1.8m Grey Mist round rug.

  • The Detail: Featuring sophisticated folded edges, this rug provides a clean, architectural finish without the distraction of a bulky border.

  • The Purpose: This circular "landing pad" softens the sharp corners of the pavilion and makes the transition spaces feel intentional and cozy.

Expert Insight: Materiality & Scale

"A home of this scale requires a thoughtful balance of textures," says Catriona Morgan, owner of Natural Rugs. "By using a curated palette of seagrass, wool, and jute, we were able to bring an organic warmth to the pavilion's clean lines, ensuring the interior feels as grounded as the landscape it overlooks."

Pro-Tip: Why Natural Fibers?

Beyond the aesthetics, the beauty of choosing seagrass, wool, and jute is the low maintenance. In a rural retreat, these rugs don't trap dust or allergens like synthetic carpets—a quick vacuum is all it takes to keep this award-winning home gallery-ready.

"The use of natural textures ensures the house feels like a natural extension of the landscape, rather than an imposition upon it."
