Position is Paramount

Positioning is one of the most important elements when selecting your rug placement, and symmetry is the key to filling your space. Rugs should either be placed evenly between furniture with equal portions of floor showing on all sides, or with even portions of furniture sitting on top of the rug for a visually pleasing, symmetrical space.

The Perfect Shape

Ideal for defining your space, square and rectangle rugs create a visual foundation that can be built upon with statement pieces of furniture and pops of colour; while round rugs create a softness and welcoming feeling of unity and wholeness.

The perfectly shaped rug for your space will also be defined by the furniture that will sit on top of it. Round tables combined with round rugs and rectangular furniture with rectangular rugs create appealing spaces that are proportional and pleasing to the eye.

Size Does Matter

If you’re looking for a rug to define your space (for example to create a lounge room in an open plan house), the rug should fill your space almost to the outer edges, leaving approximately 20cm of flooring visible along each side.

Similarly, if the rug is creating a dining space in the home, the table and chairs should fit within the middle of the rug. One of the most important aspects of choosing a dining rug is to ensure that chairs are prevented from catching as they’re moved in and out from underneath the table.
