Honouring World Day Against Child Labour

12 June marked World Day Against Child Labour—a time for reflection and a renewed commitment to ethical practice. At Natural Rugs, this day is not just another date, it’s a powerful reminder of the values woven into our rugs and the lives we help shape along the way.

We are proud partners of GoodWeave International, the leading organisation dedicated to ending child labour in global supply chains. Together, we’re working to ensure that the beauty of our handcrafted rugs does not come at the cost of a child’s freedom, education, or future.

From Looms to Learning: Sarina’s Story

In regions like South Asia, particularly Nepal and India, thousands of children are still exploited in informal work settings—often hidden in weaving sheds and factories. GoodWeave’s unannounced inspections uncover these hidden cases, providing the children not only freedom but also a new beginning.

One such child is Sarina. When found working in a factory, she was brought to Hamro Ghar, a transit home operated by GoodWeave for survivors of child labour. There, she received shelter, psychosocial support, and was enrolled in a basic-level course. Today, Sarina is on a journey of healing and education, with a new sense of hope.

Her story is just one among many. Children like Sarina often go on to receive formal education through rehabilitation programs such as the Laboratory School’s residential curriculum. GoodWeave also works with local partners like Children Welfare and Rural Development Services to provide childcare for carpet workers, helping families keep their children in school instead of the workforce.
